Autumn Surf Lessons in Portugal: Why Lagos and Matosinhos Are Perfect Right Now

Summer may be over, but for surfers the best part of the year is just beginning. Autumn brings consistent swell, quieter beaches and a calmer rhythm along the Portuguese coast, making it one of the best seasons to learn to surf or improve your level. At Salty Wave Surf School we teach in two very different places: Lagos in the Algarve and Matosinhos, right next to Porto. Here is why autumn is such a good time to join us, and what else to enjoy while you’re there.

Why autumn is the best season to surf in Portugal

  • More consistent waves. As the Atlantic wakes up after summer, the swell becomes more regular. That means more days with good conditions for lessons.
  • Fewer people in the water. With the summer crowds gone, there is more space on every wave, which makes learning easier and safer.
  • Mild weather. Sunny days and comfortable temperatures are common, especially in the south, so time on the beach is still a pleasure.
  • Perfect for every level. Beginners get gentler, uncrowded conditions to stand up for the first time, while intermediate surfers can work on turns, wave selection and reading the ocean.

Surf lessons in Lagos, Algarve: sun, nature and quiet beaches

In the Algarve we choose the best spot every day for the conditions, either around Lagos or on the wild Costa Vicentina. This flexibility is what makes autumn lessons here so good: whatever the swell and wind are doing, there is almost always a beach that works for your level.

Our group surf lessons in the Algarve are perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers, and we also offer private surf lessons in Lagos and kids surf lessons. Pick-ups in Lagos, Praia da Luz and Burgau are always free.

What to do in Lagos and the western Algarve in autumn

  • Ponta da Piedade: the golden cliffs, arches and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade are among the most beautiful views in Portugal. Walk the clifftop paths at sunset or see them from the water by kayak or boat.
  • Coastal walks: the municipality of Lagos has several walking routes and trails along the coast and countryside, ideal for a rest day between surf sessions.
  • The Costa Vicentina: the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park is one of the wildest and best-preserved coastlines in Europe. Long walks on the Rota Vicentina, empty beaches like Praia do Castelejo and dramatic sunsets are part of the experience.
  • Aljezur: on the west coast, Aljezur combines a historic village with its Moorish castle and some of the most beautiful wild beaches in the Algarve, such as Praia do Monte Clérigo. See the beaches of Aljezur and what to visit on the municipality’s website.
  • Vila do Bispo and Sagres: the municipality of Vila do Bispo is home to Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, the south-western tip of Europe. Visit the Cape St. Vincent Fortress and watch one of the most impressive sunsets in Portugal.
  • Slow down: the Algarve in autumn is all about sun, nature and rest. Enjoy the historic centre of Lagos, fresh fish by the marina and long, quiet afternoons on the beach.

Surf lessons in Matosinhos, Porto: the city and the ocean together

Matosinhos is Porto’s surf beach, just a short trip from the city centre. Its wide sandy bay and protected conditions make it one of the best places in the north of Portugal to learn to surf, and in autumn it gets a steady supply of waves.

Join our daily group lessons in Porto or book private surf lessons in Porto if you want to progress faster with one-to-one coaching. Small groups and friendly instructors guide you every step of the way.

What to do in Porto and Matosinhos in autumn

  • Explore Porto’s historic centre: wander the Ribeira riverside, climb the Clérigos Tower, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge and visit the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. The official guides to Porto’s must-see attractions and the Porto Top 10 are a great place to start.
  • Culture and monuments: churches covered in blue azulejo tiles, museums and lively neighbourhoods. See Visit Porto’s cultural attractions, the city’s Explore Porto guide and Turismo do Porto e Norte for more ideas across the city and the north of Portugal.
  • Seafood in Matosinhos: after your lesson, head to one of the many grill restaurants in Matosinhos, famous across Portugal for fresh fish cooked on the street-side grills. The Matosinhos tourism page has more about the area.
  • Leça da Palmeira: walk along the seafront to Leça and the Praia da Senhora da Boa Nova, with its rocky coastline and architecture by Álvaro Siza.

Algarve or Porto? How to choose

  • Choose Lagos if you want sun, nature, quiet beaches and a relaxing holiday with surf every day.
  • Choose Matosinhos if you want to combine surf lessons with a city break full of culture, monuments and great food.

Can’t decide? Why not do both: start with a few lessons in Porto, then travel south to keep improving in the Algarve.
